Severe floods in Malaysia force thousands to evacuate

(MENAFN) Heavy rains and worsening floods in Malaysia have prompted the evacuation of thousands of residents, according to local reports.

In Pahang state, authorities moved 8,226 people to temporary shelters on Thursday, a sharp increase from 3,796 evacuees reported the previous day, state news agency Bernama said.

Flooding also affected other states, with 347 people displaced in Johor, 913 in Terengganu, and 16 in Kelantan.

The latest flooding is part of a series of extreme weather events, including landslides, storms, and cyclones, causing widespread devastation across South and Southeast Asia.

In Indonesia, at least 1,059 people have died and 192 remain missing, while Sri Lanka has reported 640 fatalities with 211 unaccounted for. Malaysia has confirmed three deaths so far, according to reports.
